MRFIL

Magnetic Resonance Functional Imaging Lab

Currently we have projects in the following areas:

· Dynamic Speech Imaging

· Imaging Microvascular Blood Flow with FENSI

· Magnetic Susceptibility Estimation/Correction

· Structural Multiparametric Imaging

· Functional Imaging

· High Resolution Diffusion Tensor Imaging

An MR acquisition can be sensitized to directionally specific diffusion in the myelinated white matter axons in the brain.  This can be potentially useful in making inferences on connectivity between cognitive processing centers or inferring health of neurons.

Fast imaging of soft tissue in the velar region is necessary for understanding the normal function of muscles use in speech.  This is a spiral FLASH image.

Microvascular blood flow in the brain represents the functionally relevant flow in arterioles, capillaries and venules.  Flow is usually measured indirectly by tagging spins at a distance from the region of interest in a technique called arterial spin labeling (ASL).  Quantitation of ASL suffers from deviations in transit time. We developed a technique called  Flow ENhancement of Signal Intensity (FENSI) to provide a direct, quantitative, and directionally-sensitive measure of microvascular blood flow.
